Description

Cookie Run: OvenBreak is a wonderfully addictive and simple take on the endless runner. With a unique 2D art style, plenty of character, and an incredibly generous freemium model, it’s one of the best running games available.

Cookie Run: OvenBreak is a very unique game that strongly resembles an endless runner like Temple Run. Unlike Temple Run, however, it’s not endless, with each level being limited by your runner’s energy. Also unlike Temple Run, Cookie Run: OvenBreak has variable difficulty and plenty of free goodies that ensure you’re never pressured to spend money. While you can certainly purchase things to get ahead, this is one of the most generous freemium games you can find.

Like many other freemium games, Cookie Run: OvenBreak uses a system called “stamina” that keeps you from playing the game for hours on end – at first. Each of the cookies you have unlocked in Cookie Run: OvenBreak have a resource called stamina that depletes when they play levels, preventing you from playing the same level on repeat. The big thing here is that this resource is per-cookie. More than just about any other game in the genre, Cookie Run: OvenBreak will give you a LOT of rewards, allowing you to fill out your roster for free. If you’ve played the game for more than a few weeks, you’ll be able to play for as long as you want by simply cycling through cookies in order to keep going.

Confusing matters somewhat, there’s also a resource called “energy.” This bar governs how far your cookies can get within each level. While this limits your runs, it’s a breath of fresh air compared to truly endless games like Temple Run. There’s no stress to keep a run going forever – when your energy bar depletes, you get to make a sane decision about whether you should keep going or whether you should burn in-game resources to continue. Just like with characters, Cookie Run: OvenBreak is fairly generous here, too, and spending in-game resources to continue playing will usually pay for itself.

The many cookies in Cookie Run: OvenBreak all have their own sets of skills and traits. They also come with several pets that can really turn the tide of each level. With hundreds of combinations of cookies and pets, you’re free to customize your arsenal to match the challenges of a particular level or event or mesh with your unique playstyle. Again, it’s a big departure from the fairly limited roster of most endless runners.

Cookie Run: OvenBreak has a very odd difficulty curve. Several of the levels are almost trivial, while others are quite difficult and require very precise timing. The game does an okay job of spacing out these levels so that you have time to get used to things before you get overwhelmed, but you’ll also often get a bunch of easyish levels gated behind a fairly difficult one. Overall, this is definitely a game that you can play casually on the train, but you’ll find that a few stages will require much more concentration than others.

How to play

In general, Cookie Run: OvenBreak is a game that’s about solid decision-making. This means picking the right cookie and pet for the job, leveling up your cookies and pets, and avoiding obstacles while you run. These things should come first and foremost. While you can definitely use some tricks to get a little bit more out of your run, you shouldn’t worry about micro-optimizations until you’ve leveled up your favorite cookies as much as you can.

One thing that sounds big (but is subtle in practice) is that your run won’t end unless you’re on the ground. This means that if your energy is about to deplete you can jump in the air for a few seconds of extra time. If there’s a heart potion right in front of you, this can make a big difference – or if you’re playing a cookie with a glide or a double jump. This isn’t often the case, however, so you’ll usually just get a few more pickups with your extra effort.

As far as clearing the level goes, try to pay attention to the pattern of pickups. Cookie Run: OvenBreak doesn’t have any misleading jellies. In other words, if the jellies go down, there’s probably an obstacle you’ll need to slide under. If they go up, get ready to jump. By following the jellies, you can ignore a lot of the other stuff in the level while achieving success.

In terms of setup, it’s a good idea to check other players. Use the in-game leaderboards or social media sites to see what the ‘meta’ for the level you’re playing is. Don’t forget that different types of levels have different objectives. Story Mode runs are short, meaning you’ll want to optimize your score per second, while longer modes like Trophy Race are best suited for endurance-oriented setups. Don’t be afraid to experiment and see what works best for you!

Cookie Run: OvenBreak has regular limited events, complete with in-game storylines, generous rewards, and plenty of unique activities. These often involve doing special tasks in in-game levels in order to advance a plot, and you can sometimes get limited characters or pets for participating. Just like in other freemium games, events serve as a great way to keep you playing long-term and spice up gameplay. Again, the big thing that separates Cookie Run is the generosity here: it’s fairly normal to get a lot of rare, high-value cookies or pets over the course of an event without spending any money at all.

As far as gameplay goes, the stress-free nature of Cookie Run: OvenBreak’s non-endless endless running makes it incredibly fun. While you won’t get the same sense of satisfaction you get from smashing a record in an endless endless runner, you also don't get the boring stuff in between where you fail early on in the run a few hundred times in a row. The great freemium model, simple controls, and unique characters help make it feel great to play. It’s definitely a game worth checking out.
